20/06/2010 GWP Builds Ascension Church in Zhinvali
On 20th of June with the blessing of Georgian Patriarchate foundation has been laid for the construction of Ascension Church in Aragvi Gorge. Georgian Water and Power carries out this charity project.
Georgian Water and Power will allocate GEL 100 000 for the construction of Ascension Church and it will be completed in August.
In 1985 due to the construction of Zhinvali Dam several churches turned out to be under the water. Among the churches there was Ascension Church built in XI-XII centuries. The church is seen only during winter period, when the water level drops. In order to return the shrine to the faithful a project has been developed on the initiative of Company Georgian Water and Power, which provides for construction of exact analog of Ascension Church.
The final option of the project and location of the church have been agreed at the meeting of Catolicos- Patriarch of All Georgia and General Director of the Company.
Ascension Church will be built on the left slope of Zhinvali Dam on Mta – Tusheti road near village Chinti.
Tsilkani Metropolitan Zosime blessed the commencement of the construction of Ascension Church. The ceremony was attended by Nikoloz Bakhtadze Administrative Director of Georgian Water and Power and other managers of the company.
The local mason team will work on the construction of the church. The church will be built with the stone produced in Ananuri which is similar to the old church.
