27/09/2010 GWP built equal reproduction of the Holy Cross Church in Zhinvali
A new church started to function on the left flank of Zhinvali dam near the village of Chinti on September 27, on the holiday of the Ascension of the Cross.
The Holy Cross Church was blessed by the Tsilkani eparchy metropolitan Zosime who administered divine service. Joerg Matthies, general director of GWP, other managers of the Company and its employees, as well as residents of nearby villages attended the blessing ceremony.
In the past century, in particular in 1985, when construction of Zhinvali dam was completed, several villages and churches of Dusheti region including the Holy Cross Church turned out to be underwater. This Christian shrine constructed in XI-XII centuries and preserved by Zhinvali water in an original state can be seen only in winter when water level decreases.
A charity project was initiated on the initiative of GWP in order to return this oldest shrine to the parish. The project provided for the construction of exact analog of the Holy Cross Church. Final version of the project and the place for the church’s construction was agreed at the meeting between the Catholicos-Patriarch of All-Georgia and the Company’s general director.
The foundation of the Holy Cross Church near the Zhinvali water reservoir was laid on June 20. Total amount necessary for the construction was provided by the initiator of the project – Georgian Water and Power Company. A brigade of experienced masons under the guidance of experts has been working on the construction of the church. The church is built by the building stone obtained in Ananuri, which is analogous to the material used for the construction of the old Holy Cross Church.
On the same day Georgian Water and Power donated to the newly built church an icon of the Ascension of the Holy Cross, icons of different saints and iconostasis, candlesticks and other accessories for the religious service. The Company’s United Trade Union also participated in the upgrading and equipping of the church and donated GEL 1000. The GWP employees will also donate on their initiative GEL 3000 to the newly built shrine.
